health benefits moringa powder

I discovered the health benefits of Moringa powder thanks to Ayurveda.

This was long before Moringa became a ‘superfood’ and a fad. Here's the story...

Some years ago I was invited to a friend's house for lunch and she served sambar with drumsticks. When I asked her where she got the drumsticks, she pointed to a tree in her garden.

My friend told me that these delicious seed pods (or drumsticks) came from this tree called Moringa. And that’s what led me to discover this tree and the numerous health benefits of Moringa powder.

If you don’t know much about this tree, let me first tell you what Moringa is.

Moringa oleifera is a tree which is known by different names in various countries. It is also called  Moringa, drumstick tree, horseradish tree, ben oil tree and benzoil tree.

Curious where the Moringa tree grows?

Well, although the Moringa tree is native to North Western India, it has spread throughout parts of Asia, africa and Latin America because it grows pretty fast and survives even with very little water.

Now that the Moringa tree is so widespread, it is being in many ways...

Each part of this tree is super useful - right from the leaves, bark, gum, flowers, roots, seeds, seed pods to the oil. Not so long ago, Moringa was labeled as a superfood and became a rage in the wellness world.

The most popular form of Moringa being used these days is - Moringa leaf powder and capsules.

Before you think that Moringa is a new thing, wait a sec, that’s not actually true because...

People in India have been using Moringa since ancient times and this plant has very special place in Ayurveda because it has many medicinal properties. Called Shigru in Hindi, Moringa is used to balance Kapha and Vata dosha. The roots, bark, leaves, fruits and seeds of the Moringa tree are used in Ayurvedic formulations.

Because of its antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, Moringa is used in Ayurvedic remedies for detoxification, aiding digestion, relieving pain, healing wounds, treating worm infestation, treating diabetes, reducing weight and improving vision. It is  also used in Ayurvedic pain relief oils and herbal pastes to reduce inflammation.

So, as it turns out, Moringa is really a superfood and super-herb, tried and tested by the ancient science of Ayurveda. Trust me, this plant has SO many health benefits that you’ll want to get it right way:

1. Full of nutrients

Like any superfood, Moringa stays true to its name and that’s because it’s packed with proteins, amino acids, vitamins (A, C & E), minerals (calcium, potassium) and it gets even better - it has zero cholesterol!

2. Energizes you

Moringa powder is undoubtedly one of the most energizing superfoods around. Feel sluggish in the mornings, the moringa powder is your friend.

I like to start my day with a green smoothie with a little bit of Moringa powder added to it. Being high on nutrients & fiber, Moringa gives me the energy to keep going during the day.

3. Rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals

Research shows that Moringa leaves have high antioxidants that can fight free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules that cause oxidative stress, damage your cells and create inflammation in your body.

Ever have knee pain? Then getting some Moringa powder into your system will help. It contains flavonoids, polyphenols, and ascorbic acid, and these powerful antioxidants protect various organs in the body from the harm caused by free radicals.

4. Anti-inflammatory

Ayurveda says that inflammation is the root cause of several chronic diseases.

Moringa powder is an anti-inflammatory agent and even medical research proves that Moringa leaves can lower inflammation in the cells

5. Anti-aging

Like I mentioned before Moringa powder is filled with antioxidants. And that’s why Moringa is fantastic for your skin because it reduces oxidative stress and slows down the process of aging.

Now you know why Moringa is being touted as the best anti-aging herb!. This by far is one of my favorite health benefits of Moringa powder.

6. Helps Treat diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is growing worldwide due to the growth of sedentary lifestyles and excess consumption of processed food.

Research says that Moringa leaf powder can bring down high levels of lipid and glucose in your body and help regulate oxidative stress in people suffering from diabetes.

The health benefits of Moringa leaf powder for diabetics are twofold - it lowers blood sugar & cholesterol plus guards cells from being damaged.

7. Protects the heart

Heart disease is one of the number 1 killers on the planet today. Eating a nourishing diet, exercising, relaxing and including superfoods like Moringa in your daily routine can protect your heart.

Medical studies prove that Moringa leaves can prevent plaque formation in the arteries and help in blood lipid control, and also lower cholesterol levels.

8. Protects the liver

One of the lesser known health benefits of Moringa powder is that it cleans out the toxins in the liver. Since Moringa leaf powder has a high amount of polyphenols, it aids the detoxification of the liver.

A medical study shows that Moringa can decrease liver damage and fibrosis and even reverse oxidation.

9. Reduces fatigue

Feel tired all the time? You’re not alone. These days tiredness plagues the world like a disease and it is due our tech-obsessed lives.

Moringa powder is an effective way to reduce fatigue because it contains two essential minerals which help with rejuvenating your body - iron and magnesium.

Moringa is also high in Vitamin A which aids the metabolism of iron in your body. And as it contains loads of iron, it's also great for anaemic people with low haemoglobin levels.

10. Boosts immunity

One of the best health benefits of Moringa powder is its immune-boosting qualities.

Loaded with iron and Vitamin A, a regular intake of Moringa powder ensures that your immune system functions perfectly and keeps diseases away.

11. Helps you grow muscle

If you think protein comes from meat, think again because Moringa leaves have an unusually high amount of protein for a plant that promotes muscle growth.

If you’re vegetarian or vegan and want to maintain your protein levels, try having Moringa powder on a regular basis.  Like snacks? Then how about making some Nigerian Moringa Puff Puff.

Due to its high magnesium level, Moringa powder is the perfect superfood for brain health. Magnesium plays an important role in promoting good brain function and psychological health.

13. Promotes digestion

Moringa has lots of Calcium which is responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and maintaining ideal gut health. Being full of fibre, Moringa powder acts as a digestive aid, prevents constipation and can also help you manage your weight better.

The best time to have Moringa powder is in the morning. Peach and Avocado Overnight Oats with Moringa Powder would be great breakfast idea.

You’re a fit person if you have strong and healthy bones, and Moringa powder is amazingly beneficial for strengthening the bones.

15. Promotes dental health

Ever since I started using Moringa powder, I’ve noticed that I no longer have toothaches and inflammation in my gums (that’s because Moringa has lots of magnesium and is anti-inflammatory).

If you tend to have toothache quite often, you might be having a magnesium deficiency (you see, this nutrient is important for strong teeth).

Can't wait to get your hands on some Moringa? Hold on, read this below to ensure you take the right dose...

The lovely thing about Moringa powder is that you can use it daily. The ideal dosage of Moringa powder is 5-10 grams per day and the good news is - there are no known harmful side effects!

If you’re using Moringa powder for the first time, you may get can diarrhea for a short while (that’s coz it has tons of antioxidants that will begin to flush out toxins from your gut). If you experience mild diarrhea after using Moringa for the first time, stick to ¼ teaspoon and increase the dose gradually over a period of time.

Since Moringa is packed with energy, it’s best to start your day with a Moringa morning smoothie (this is when you can use a bigger quantity of the powder as compared to the rest of the day).

Ayurvedically speaking, Moringa powder can increase burning sensation in the body. If you have a sensitive stomach or gastritis, please consult a doctor before you take this herb.

Avoid taking Moringa powder during your period because it increases Pitta and interferes with your menstrual flow. Also, Moringa should not be taken if case you have a bleeding disorder.

Pregnant women should not take Moringa because it can cause miscarriage. New mothers can take Moringa a few months after childbirth.

Always buy organic Moringa powder made with naturally dried leaves. Make sure that the color of the powder is green before buying it. It should not look brown, dark brown or black and if it does, it has probably lost its potency.

I totally heart Moringa powder and use it every day. If you found this post useful & can’t wait to try Moringa powder, go ahead and share it and pin it on Pinterest.
